About Auto 1

We started as an idea in 2013 to supply top tier oil to the Salt Lake Valley. Two brothers, Cody Black and Jason Bennett, grew up in the oil industry. From watching their grandfather fix trucks to owing their own lubricant shops, they have been a part of the oil business for decades.

The Auto 1 Oil Company Story

I’m Cody Black, and alongside my team, we have dedicated endless effort to creating Auto 1 Oil, a company built on honesty, transparency, integrity, quality oil, and family values. We strive to become your premier oil distributor. My passion started in 2001 when I started my first quick lube, Checker Flag. In 2011, we expanded, adding five more stores throughout Utah and one in Nevada. I have spent the last 23 years and will continue to do so, learning what’s most important in oil, business management, and customer care. My team and I believe our superiority lies in our ability to connect with you personally, which is rooted in our background with quick lubes and automotive shops. With honesty and transparency as core values, we will openly aim to share our insights about the business and what we’ve learned along the way with our loyal customers and friends to help them achieve their goals.

In 2013, I met with Warren Distribution (Changed name to Highline Warren in 2021), one of the largest oil blending plants in the USA. They own brands like MAG 1, Prime Guard, and Accel. I was amazed at the processes they have in place to ensure high-quality lubricants, along with the fact they are a distributor for Shell, Mobil, Lucas, Chevron, Liquid Moly, and Valvoline. After learning about their high standards and experience, I formulated my PCMO lubricants, known as Auto 1 Oil, with them because I love how their primary supplier was Motiva Base Oil and Afton Chemicals.

From what I have learned over the last ten years when making lubricants, the three main costs are:

  1. Base Oils
  2. Additives
  3. Transportation

Now, from what I have learned about making motor oils, Group 2 100/120N is the main cost in Syn Blends and Conventional 5w30, 5w20 motor oils, and Group 3 100/120 N is the main cost in full Syn 5w30, 5w20 motor oils. Then, 200/220N base oil is the main cost driver for 15w40 motor oil. Everyone can track these base oil lube report costs at www.lubesngreases.com, which helps you know when your cost should be going up and when your cost should be going down.

I have put together a spreadsheet to show the last couple of years of base oil posted prices, and you can see when they have gone up and when they have gone down.  From running my quick lube, I have learned that most of my suppliers never talked to me about the decreases, insteadonly the increases. They were quick to increase my prices but never seemed to tell me about the decreases until I got competitive prices from others months later.

As a result, I was inspired to launch my own oil distribution company with my fantastic team. Customers will be informed where base oils are trading and will see our prices are locked in step with the market. You’ll find our website very useful to follow the oil price increase and decrease trends.

My team and I have crafted a premier oil, mainly blended with Motiva base oil and Afton additives, primarily manufactured by Highline Warren, called Auto 1 Oil. Alongside our premium oil, we will offer Medallion and Dyna-Plex, owned and made by Moove and Petrochoice, one of the world’s largest ExxonMobil lubricant distributors. Most of their base oils are ExxonMobil, and their additives are Infineum, a joint venture between Shell and ExxonMobil. Another brand we will offer is Super S, which is owned and made by Smitty’s. They primarily use Chevron-based oils and Afton additives. We are also excited to provide complete lines of grease using Super S for those of you in this market.

Pricing will always be current and accessible through our website: www.auto1oil.com. Our pricing is based on current base oil rates. We are committed to a standardized pricing structure alongside honesty, equality, and fairness for all, which is essential to all the members of Auto 1 Oil.

Auto 1 Oil commits to maintaining transparency regarding our supply sources and origins and ensuring consistent pricing for all customers. It would be our pleasure to become your premier oil distributor.

Thank you, Cody Black
